Down To Earth report, risk of presence of coli bacteria
Alarm for the over 25 million faithful who have immersed themselves in the Ganges river in Prayagraj since Monday in India, on the occasion of the Hindu festival Maha Kumbh Mela.
According to the complaint by the environmentalist site Down To Earth, the devotees were not correctly informed of the real conditions of the water.
The site recalls that according to the directives of the National Green Tribunal, in the diving area the water should be clean enough to be able to drink it: instead, according to data collected yesterday in real time by the monitoring system of the Central Pollution Control Board, the request biochemistry of oxygen (Bod), which should not exceed the limit of 3mg per ml, was already at 4 mg, resulting in poor water quality. Despite the continuous injection of clean water through pipes specially created by the authorities to facilitate the flow, yesterday’s data “suggest that the management of sewage through treatment plants is not working as it should”, underlines Down To Earth, “and raise fears that the colibacterial level is higher than acceptable.”
