Seoul, Yoon accepts the resignation of the Defense Minister

Kim Yong-hyun replaced as ambassador to Saudi Arabia

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, replacing him with the ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Choi Byung-hyuk. This was reported by the Yonhap agency, reporting the first fall in power in the government since the declaration of martial law on Tuesday evening, withdrawn after six hours in the wake of Parliament’s vote against.

Yoon’s decision came amid growing controversy over Kim’s role, on which an impeachment motion promoted by the opposition hangs, in the attempted authoritarian presidential turn.
