Torrential rain and gusts of wind up to 191 km/h

Taiwan is preparing for the arrival of the powerful Typhoon Champi, which is passing near the east coast of the island bringing with it torrential rains and gusts of wind up to 191 km/h. BBC writes it.

The Taiwanese authorities have urged the population to stay away from the coasts and mountainous areas; Furthermore, the evacuation of residents of the north-eastern coast who live near a natural dam, formed following a landslide and now at risk of collapse due to the storm, is underway. Hundreds of flights, both in Taiwan and neighboring Japan, have been cancelled, affecting thousands of passengers. According to the authorities, at least one victim has been recorded in Taiwan, a person who was dragged away by the waves.

As Champi approaches Taiwan, it is already bringing heavy rain and intense winds to the Batanes, a Philippine archipelago located between southern Taiwan and Luzon, the main island in the northern Philippines. In the Batanes Islands, the second alert level has been declared on a scale of five, which means that winds of 150 km/h are expected. Photographs published on the local administration’s Facebook page show waves crashing into coastal villages and roads closed to traffic. At the moment there are no victims reported.
