Amnesty in Burma for 77th independence, 6,000 released

Many other sentences were also reduced but no news on Suu Kyi

Myanmar’s military government releases around 6,000 prisoners and reduces the sentences of other detainees as part of a mass amnesty to mark the 77th anniversary of independence from Britain. The international media reported this, underlining that there is no news regarding the possibility that the amnesty could also concern Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been placed in de facto isolation by the military since they took power from her government elected in 2021. The former leader, 79, is serving a 27-year sentence after being convicted in a series of politically tinged prosecutions brought by the military.

It is not even clear – specifies the Guardian – whether among those released there are any of the thousands of political prisoners locked up for opposing the army regime after the military coup.
