A tuna sold for 1.2 million euros at the first auction of the year in Tokyo

Second highest price ever recorded. Signs of optimism

A tuna weighing 276 kilograms was sold at the first auction of the year in Tokyo for 207 million yen, equivalent to approximately 1.27 million euros: this is the second highest price ever recorded since the statistics began, which has fueled hopes of an economic recovery in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Starting at 5.10 in the morning at the Toyosu market, one of the main tourist places of the capital, the auction as per tradition represents one of the main indicators at the beginning of the year to monitor the level of optimism of entrepreneurs in the trade, as well as giving a signal a good omen for the fishing industry. The bluefin tuna, caught off the coast of Oma in the northeastern prefecture of Aomori, was purchased jointly by a wholesaler and the company that runs the Sushi Ginza Onodera restaurant chain.

Today’s result, however, is far from the record set at the 2019 auction – the first held at the current site, after the move from the historic Tsukiji market, east of Tokyo – during which a 278 kilogram tuna was sold for 333, 6 million yen, equal to 2.06 million euros.
