Ahead of Parliament’s vote on the impeachment motion
Just over an hour after Parliament voted on President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment motion, a flood of people continues to flock to Yeouido Park for a massive demonstration, organized to loudly demand the resignation of the highest institutional office of South Korea. The martial law declared on Tuesday evening by Yoon and withdrawn six hours later following its rejection by Parliament was too serious. In reality there are two protest sit-ins, one next to the other between civic groups and unions, each with its own stage where rock bands go up and play protest songs and the national anthem, according to images streamed . Flags wave, while protesters clutch blue balloons and sing together, in a wintery music festival atmosphere.
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), one of the largest workers’ organizations in South Korea, has a solid presence, in line with the plan to go on strike until Yoon resigns.
Various civic groups from across the country also joined the demonstration, including those from Gwangju, Daejeon and Busan.
Yesterday, Seoul police reported that there would be “a huge demonstration” today with tens of thousands of people.
