The world's largest crocodile dies in Australia

Cassius lived in a sanctuary and was 5.5 meters long

The world’s largest captive crocodile has died in a wildlife sanctuary in Australia. The BBC writes it online.

Cassius was almost 5.5 meters long, weighed a ton and was thought to be at least 110 years old, although no one knew for sure. The huge saltwater crocodile had been living in the sanctuary on an island off the coast of Queensland since it was captured in Australia’s Northern Territory in the 1980s.

In 2011, he was awarded the Guinness World Record for largest crocodile in captivity. Before being captured, Cassius lived in the wild where he was known to eat livestock and attack boats.

Cassius was “our beloved companion” and “a cherished member of our family,” Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat says.

Founder George Craig purchased Cassius in 1987. “He brought joy and companionship to his best friend George for over 37 years,” he said.
