Record pollution in Lahore, over 80 times acceptable level

Having exceeded the permitted peak, Calcutta is in second place

Air pollution in Lahore, Pakistan’s second city, reached an all-time high today, more than 80 times the level deemed acceptable by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The air quality index peaked at 1,067, before dropping to around 300 in the morning – air is considered “bad” starting at 180 in this global classification.

The Indian city of Calcutta ranked second in the US air quality index with 366 points, the capital New Delhi in third and Mumbai fourth with 229 points, while the city of Wuhan, China, ranked ranked fifth with 177 points.
