More than 500 soldiers and volunteers deployed to distribute aid

One person has died and thousands have been evacuated in southern Thailand due to flooding caused by three days of torrential rain, authorities announced today, adding that further heavy rainfall is expected in the region.

The victim is a student in Narathiwat province, on the border with Malaysia, where more than 2,700 people have been forced to flee their homes, said the head of local prevention and relief services, Wasan Chaitaweewong. Furthermore, the authorities closed 65 schools.

The National Meteorological Department announced that the heavy rainfall warning is still in force, with continued rainfall forecast for 70% of Narathiwat province until early December.
