South Korea, Yoon's impeachment trial begins. The president facing arrest

The first hearing, of the five scheduled, lasted a few minutes

The impeachment trial of suspended South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol began today in Seoul: the country’s Constitutional Court will have to decide whether to deprive him of his duties for the failed attempt to impose martial law in the country. The spokesperson of the Constitutional Court told the AFP agency that the first hearing, of the five scheduled, ended after a few minutes and Yoon was not present. Yoon’s lawyer announced on Sunday that his client would not attend the hearing for security reasons.

The next four hearings will be held on January 16, 21, 23 and February 4.

South Korean police and anti-corruption officials will try to execute the second attempt on the arrest warrant against Yoon tomorrow morning. The turning point, after a bitter tug of war, occurred because the military unit guarding the presidential residence in Seoul gave the green light in the evening for officials to enter to arrest Yoon, Yonhap reported. Impeachment proceedings are pending against the deposed president, which saw the first hearing at the Constitutional Court today.
