Shangri-La dialogue in Singapore, focus on defense and alliances

The Asian security forum between strategic diplomacy and new balances

The Shangri-La Dialogue will be held in Singapore from 29 to 31 May, a summit of maximum importance for the strategic-military debate and global diplomacy.

This year the forum takes on even greater importance due to Beijing’s choice: China has in fact decided not to send Defense Minister Dong Jun. This strategic absence gives way to the public diplomacy of the United States and its allies.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will lead the US delegation on its fourth formal trip to the Indo-Pacific region. During the summit, Hegseth will deliver a speech focused on protecting America’s national interests and collective security. On the sidelines of the forum, the Pentagon chief will launch a busy agenda of bilateral and multilateral talks. Among the most relevant institutional meetings, Hegseth will see Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Defense Minister Chan Chun Sing, as well as several key allies and security partners. The objective is to consolidate the network of alliances at a time of persistent regional tensions.
