Seoul, work begins in Parliament on Yoon's impeachment

Media: ‘The ruling party is against it but will not leave the chamber’

The speaker of the South Korean Parliament Woo Won-shik opened the plenary session called to vote on the impeachment motion, for the second time in a week, against President Yoon Suk-yeol. Yoon is under pressure for his clumsy attempt to impose martial law, which was declared on December 3 and withdrawn six hours later following Parliament’s vote against.

The People Power Party, the ruling party in South Korea, has decided to oppose the impeachment motion presented by the opposition in Parliament against President Yoon Suk-yeol, in the run-up to the vote. However, Yonhap reported, Yoon’s party decided not to leave the chamber as it did last Saturday, scuppering the first motion.

In this way the chances of a green light for impeachment thanks to the secret ballot vote remain open. Yoon is under pressure over the attempted martial law, which was declared on December 3 and withdrawn six hours later after Parliament voted against it.
