Rain in Nepal and India, at least 62 victims

Landslides and floods in the North-East Indian and in the East Nepalese

The landslides caused by the strong rains fallen on the night between yesterday and today in the Darjeeling region, in the north-east of India, and in the province of Koshi, in the eastern Nepal, killed at least 62 people. This was confirmed by several official Indian and Nepalese sources.
In India there are over 20 victims. “More than 20 people have lost their lives, according to the current budget. Entire areas on the hills are isolated, the roads have been destroyed,” said Harsh V. Shringla, member of the High Chamber of the Indian Parliament, on his account X.
In Nepal the landslides and floods caused by the strong rains killed at least 42 people, said an official in charge of the EFP emergencies. “So far, 42 people have died in disaster caused by the rain and five are dispersed,” said Shanti Mahat, spokesman for the National Authority for the reduction and management of the risk of Nepal catastrophes.

“I am deeply impressed by the lost lives”. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it, referring to the victims caused by the torrential rains that have affected northeastern India in the last 48 hours. The Indian premier promised all possible assistance from the New Delhi government. Even his Nepalese approval, the first interim government minister established after the September revolts, Sushila Karki, assured that “all official agencies are ready to provide assistance” to the victims. Banerjee Mamata Bengal Bengal Prime Minister of the Indian State Bengal said that several areas have been flooded, two iron bridges collapsed, several roads have been damaged. Floods and landslides are common during the Monsoni season in the subcontinent, but experts say that climate change, combined with poorly planned development, is increasing its frequency, gravity and impact.
