New weddings in China collapse at record levels, more divorces

Drop by over 20% despite government efforts

The number of new weddings recorded in China fell to a historical minimum last year, despite the government’s efforts to encourage young people to get married and to have children, so as to arrest the demographic decline in the second largest economy in the world. The CNN writes it.

About 6.1 million couples recorded their weddings in 2024, a drop of 20.5% compared to the previous year, according to the data published on Saturday by the Ministry of Civil Affairs Chinese. It is a historical minimum since the ministry began to publish the statistics in 1986.

The collapse of marriages (and births) represents a serious challenge for Beijing, which must face the pressure exerted by a downward workforce and a rapid aging of the population on the slow -based economy of the country.

The strong drop in the number of weddings in 2024 resumed the decline that lasted a decade since 2013, after a short recovery in 2023 following the revocation of the severe restrictions due to Covid.

The figure of last year was less than half of the 13 million weddings recorded in the 2013 peak.

The data published on Saturday also showed a slight increase in the number of divorces. Last year, almost 2.6 million couples divorced, 28 thousand more than 2023.
