China, still 29 missing for a landslide in Sichuan

Rescue proceeds, disaster linked to the abundant rains

29 people are still dispersed following the landslide that hit the village of Jinping on Saturday morning, part of the city of Yibin, in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan. This was reported by the Xinhua state agency, according to which the number is still in the verification phase.

The landslide has turned into a flow of debris that caused an accumulation of unstable material on a ridge of the mountain about 1.2 kilometers long, equal to a total volume of over 100,000 cubic meters, according to a first evaluation of local experts. “A preliminary study shows that the disaster occurred for the influence of recent abundant rains and geological factors”, reported the CCTV state network, citing local authorities. Video filming transmitted showed the rescuers still engaged in the search for missing.

On Saturday, President Xi Jinping ordered the authorities to do “everything possible to seek and save disappeared people, in order to minimize the victims and adequately manage the consequences”.
