The intervention to the UN Council for Human Rights
“Justice is essential for any credible path towards peace and reconciliation in Myanmar”, the vice permanent representative of Italy at the United Nations and the other international organizations, Stefano Pisotti, said today in Geneva. Speaking in the context of the interactive dialogue strengthened on the report of the high commissioner and the independent investigative mechanism on Myanmar, within the framework of the 60/A session of the Human Rights Council, the permanent deputy representative has expressed the Italian “deep concern” for “the succession of atrocious crimes committed after the coup d’état of 2021”, underlining how the assessment of the responsibilities “cannot be postponed”.
In reiterating the support for the independent investigative mechanism – reports a statement from the representation – Pisotti underlined the Italian request of an immediate termination of violence, the release of political prisoners, the resumption of an inclusive democratic transition and humanitarian access guaranteed throughout the country.
“Italy will continue to stay alongside the Burmese people, to support civil society and to commit themselves to justice, responsibility and human rights,” concluded the vice permanent representative.
