The Region hosts some of the largest glaciers in the world
The Mountain District of Chilas, located in the northern region of Gilgit-Balstan in Pakistan, today recorded the highest temperature ever, reaching the torrid temperature of 48 and a half degrees. The authorities made it known, stressing that dealing with an unprecedented event for the area.
“This is the highest temperature ever recorded in the northern region of Pakistan,” an official of the National Authority for the management of disasters (Ndma) told Ansa, asking for anonymity. “It exceeds the previous 47.7 degree chilas record, established on July 17, 1997”.
Gilgit-Balstan is a region set in Western Himalaya and hosts some of the largest glaciers in the world, and is typically known for its fresher climate. The increase in temperatures in this area could accelerate the dissolution of the glaciers, increasing the risk of floods from the escape of glacial lakes and water deficiency in the downstream regions.
The national temperature record in Pakistan remains 53.8 degrees, recorded in the southern cities of Tartbat, in the province of Bellucistan, and Mohenjo Daro, in the province of Sindh. However, the temperature detected today in the north marks a significant and worrying record.
