Dong Jun appointed in December 2023 after removal of Li Shangfu
China has placed Defense Minister Dong Jun under investigation in the latest corruption scandal to hit the top leadership of the People’s Liberation Army. This was reported by the Financial Times, based on former and current US officials familiar with the matter. Dong, an admiral appointed in December 2023, would be the third consecutive current or former defense minister to be investigated for corruption. Dong succeeded General Li Shangfu, who was ousted after seven months in office. Both were appointed by President Xi Jinping. Li had succeeded Wei Fenghe, who was investigated for corruption after leaving office.
