Among the works also ‘The deposition’ of Caravaggio
It is art the largest sponsor for Italy at Expo 2025 Osaka. For international visitors, about one million those expected, crossing the pavilion will mean not only enter a space designed by Mario Cucinella on the model of the ideal city of the Renaissance, but also to be able to observe in the first person in an invaluable value such as “La Deposition” of Caravaggio, who arrived in Japan thanks to the Vatican.
“In front of this scene, hope seems destroyed” writes Mons. Rino Fisichella to comment on the work, “the deposition is a necessary stop, but always and only a stop illuminated by the hope of life that is donated”. A description that best represents the motto “Art regenerates life”, the theme of the Italy pavilion.
Among the great Italian painters there will also be Domenico Tintoretto, with his “The portrait of Itō Mancio”, painted in 1585. The work, part of the prestigious collection of the Trivulzio Foundation of Milan, represents a symbolic bridge between Italy and Japan, celebrating the first historic diplomatic meeting between the two countries.
Visitors will access the Italian Pavilion through a large portico with a wooden theater open on a square. And they will also appreciate four precious designs of the Atlantic Code of Leonardo da Vinci, from the Veneranda Library Ambrosiana in Milan. These works, carefully selected, are presented in rotation, offering visitors an exclusive look on Leonardo’s multifaceted genius.
There will also be space for contemporary art with installations on health and environmental issues. Among these, the circulatory apparatus of Jago and the works of Oriana Persico and Francesca Leone who explore the relationship between art, science and technology.
