Floods in Malaysia and Thailand, at least 8 dead

Tens of thousands of evacuated

At least eight people have died and tens of thousands have been forced to abandon their homes in northern Malaysia and southern Thailand due to floods caused by torrential rains that have been hitting these regions for days: officials announced today of both countries.

More than 80,000 people have been evacuated to 467 temporary shelters in Malaysia this week, with four deaths recorded in the northern states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Sarawak, according to officials. At the same time, floods in neighboring Thailand killed two people in Pattani province and two more in Songkhla province, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation announced. More than 240,000 families in southern Thailand have been affected by floods, following days of heavy rain.
