According to the Indian media “several people have tried to escape through the windows and the narrow eaves of the building”. The newspaper The Telegraph of Calcutta states that at least one of the victims died after “having launched himself from a terrace in an attempt to escape”. In India fires in buildings are frequent, above all due to the lack of equipment to prevent them and what is considered as a widespread contempt for safety standards.
