The death toll from Cyclone Fengal, which hit Sri Lanka and southern India, causing the heaviest rainfall in the last 30 years, has risen to at least 20.

The cyclone made landfall in the southeastern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Saturday before becoming an area of ​​low atmospheric pressure this morning. Sri Lanka, which was hit by the cyclone on Friday, recorded a total of 17 deaths. Nearly 470,000 people have been evacuated across the country, according to the disaster management agency.

In India, three people were electrocuted during the passage of the typhoon, Kkssr Ramachandran, minister for disaster management of the state of Tamil Nadu, said on Saturday evening, without providing details on the deaths.
