China expresses condolences for the Pope's death

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports it

China expresses “her condolence” for the death of Pope Francis. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“In recent years, China and the Vatican have maintained constructive contacts and have conducted friendly exchanges,” said the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Guo Jiakun, in what is the first official comment of Beijing on the disappearance of Pope Bergoglio.

China “is willing to make joint efforts with the Vatican to promote the continuous improvement of” bilateral relationships, added Guo in daily briefing.

Popular Republic and Holy See do not have official diplomatic relations, given that the Vatican is the last European state that still recognizes Taiwan, however considered by Beijing part “sacred” and “inalienable” of its territory and to be reunited also by force, if necessary.
