The decision arrives less than a year after the 68 -year -old’s appointment at the helm of the Democratic Liberal Party (LDP), a dominant time. Since then he has lost his majority in both chambers of Parliament. According to reports, last night the Minister of Agriculture and an former prime minister met Ishiba to urge him to resign voluntarily. Last week, four high LDP officials, including the number two of the Hiroshi Moriyama party, offered their resignation. The opponents of Ishiba had asked him to resign to take responsibility for the electoral results, after the vote of the High Chamber in July.
The parliamentarians of the LDP and regional officials from all over Japan who want a new election of the leadership will present a request tomorrow. The leadership race will be held if the majority requested will be reached. Ishiba’s mandate as the party leader should have ended in September 2027.
