‘Found while police cleared the area’. The search for missing persons continues
(ANSA-AFP) – NUWAKOT, SEPTEMBER 06 – A 64-year-old woman was rescued by rescuers in Nepal after having resisted for 10 days stuck in the ruins of her home, buried under a thick blanket of mud and debris due to the devastating flood that hit part of the country.
The rescue operation took place yesterday.
Members of the Nepal Armed Police Force involved in the rescue operation cheered when Chandrika Shrestha, covered in mud, was pulled alive from her home, located in Betrawati, Nuwakot district. “A police team found her (by chance) during an operation to clear the area of mud and debris. She was transported by helicopter to Kathmandu to receive medical treatment,” deputy police superintendent Iqbal Hawari told AFP. A video released by the Armed Police Force shows only part of the house, while the lower floors are completely submerged under a thick layer of mud.
Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to search for survivors since a tsunami-like wall of water and mud hit the China-Nepal border area on August 26 following the collapse of ice and rocks. So far, 1,344 bodies have been recovered in Nepal, while around 5,000 people remain missing, according to the national disaster management agency. In China, state media reported that 31 people had died and 531 were missing. The overall death toll thus rises to 1,375 deaths, while over 5,500 people are still missing.
