Together with him, the ‘queen of the mountain’, at the top for the eleventh time
Nepalese mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa, nicknamed ‘the man from Everest’, reached the summit of the mountain for the 32nd time today, setting a new record, while Lhakpa Sherpa broke his own record by reaching the summit for the 11th time. “The Nepalese mountaineers have once again made history on this glorious mountain”, Prime Minister Balendra Shah praised them on social media, congratulating them for their “unshakable courage” and “iron discipline”.
Kami Rita Sherpa, 56, first reached the summit of 8,849-metre Mount Everest in 1994 while working for a commercial expedition. Since then, he has climbed Everest almost every year, as a guide for his clients.
Lhakpa Sherpa, 52, nicknamed the ‘Queen of the Mountain’, reached the summit of Everest for the first time in 2000, becoming the first Nepalese woman to successfully climb and descend the world’s highest peak. “Their records galvanize other climbers,” said Himal Gautam, spokesperson for Nepal’s Ministry of Tourism. “Breaking records through healthy competition on Everest will help make safer, more dignified and better managed mountaineering”, he added.
