Xi in Rio for the G20, 'ready to strengthen ties with Brazil'

Dialogue with Lula on development strategies and international dossiers

Chinese President Xi Jinping, after taking part in Apec in Lima, arrived in Rio de Janeiro to participate in the G20 summit and for “in-depth talks” with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This was reported by the state agency Xinhua, according to which Xi said he looked forward to the exchange of views with Lula with great interest and that he was ready to “further strengthen relations between the two countries”.

The two leaders will discuss promoting development strategies between China and Brazil, as well as international and regional issues, Xi continued, noting that he has visited the South American country four times and witnessed its developments and changes over the past 30 years.

Brasilia and Beijing, which this year celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, are part of the BRICS group of major emerging economies. China is Brazil’s largest export market and bilateral trade increased by 9.9% in the first 10 months of 2024 compared to the same period last year, Xinhua added. This is Xi’s second visit to Brazil in five years, China’s Foreign Ministry said, amid strengthening economic relations in various sectors.
