‘In exchange for better relationships with Washington’
The Taliban released the American George Glezmann, putting an end to its detention lasting two years and giving President Trump a diplomatic victory that could reshape the relations of the United States with Afghanistan. The Wall Street Journal writes it. The Taliban, according to two US leaders, agreed to postpone Glezmann to the United States in exchange for better relations with Washington, renouncing the previous request that America delivered the imprisoned Taliban members.
Today the Foreign Minister Taliban Amir Khan Muttaqi met some US officials in Kabul, including the correspondent Adam Boehler.
On X, the Afghan Foreign Minister, George Glezmann, says that Glezmann’s release is a sign of his will to commit himself to the international community, and “in particular with the United States”. It was “a gesture of goodwill, which reflects the will of Afghanistan to really engage (in dialogue) with all the parts, in particular with the United States of America, on the basis of respect and mutual interests”, he writes.
