Typhon Danas on Taiwan, thousands of evacuated people

Strong rains, floods and landslides

Almost 3,000 people in Taiwan had to leave their homes because of the strong rains that the typhoon Danas unloaded on the island, causing floods and landslides. The local authorities made it known.

With winds supported at a maximum speed of 137 kilometers per hour, Danas will be expected to move north along the west coast of Taiwan during the night, said Central Weather Administration in a notice. At least 28 people were treated for slight injuries, according to the National Fire Brigade Agency.

Danas has downloaded over 500 millimeters of rain on the south of Taiwan during the weekend, said the meteorological agency, warning of intense and torrential rains on the rest of the island while the typhoon moves north. “Among tonight, tomorrow morning there will be the strongest impacts of wind and rain,” said the meteorological agency.

Most of the 2,853 people evacuated by their homes were in the mountainous areas around the southern port city of Kaohsiung, said the National Fire Brigade Agency. At least 10 landslides and 49 flooded areas were recorded, but the water then retired, added.
