They had been trapped after the flood
Rescue teams managed to extract alive today two workers who were trapped in tunnels in northern Nepal following the catastrophic flooding on August 26. The local authorities announced it.
“We have been informed that one person has just been safely extracted from the Trishuli-3 tunnel,” Nepal’s Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha said. “We have just learned that a second person has been rescued,” his Interior colleague Sudan Gurung added shortly afterwards.
Dozens of Nepalese rescuers, assisted by experts from India, China and South Korea, worked tirelessly for a week to make their way through several flood-blocked tunnels at construction sites for dams and hydroelectric plants. Immediately after the disaster, Nepalese authorities estimated that around a hundred workers may have been trapped in the Trishuli-3 tunnel alone. As of Friday, teams had recovered only a few bodies from the region’s water- and mud-filled tunnels, which they were laboriously opening up using explosives and excavators.
