The Indian Maoist rebels announce the end of the fighting

Unilaterally suspended the armed struggle, ‘ready to dialogue’

The Indian Maoist rebels have announced that they will unilaterally suspend the armed struggle and are ready for dialogue with the authorities, following the total offensive of the government to cut down the ten -year conflict.

“Due to the changed world order and the national situation, and due to the continuous appeals of the Prime Minister, the Minister of the Interior and high police officers, we decided to suspend the armed struggle,” said a spokesman for the rebel group of the Indian Communist Party (Maoist) in a note. “We are ready to start the dialogue” with the government, added the spokesperson. There was no immediate response from the government to the Maoist announcement.

India is leading an intense offensive against the latest traces of the Naxalita rebellion, which takes its name from the village at the foot of the Himalaya where the Mooist -inspired guerrilla movement began almost sixty years ago. More than 12,000 rebels, soldiers and civilians have been killed since a handful of village inhabitants rebelled against their feudal lords in 1967.
