The magnitude 6 earthquake recorded overnight in Taiwan caused landslides and the collapse of house ceilings, injuring 27 people, according to the latest update from local authorities. The epicenter was identified 12 kilometers north of Yujing, a southern agricultural district of the island known for mango cultivation.
Firefighters rescued three people, including a child, trapped in a collapsed house in nearby Nanxi district, Taipei media reported. Overall, more than 50 aftershocks were recorded after the main one struck shortly after midnight local time, Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration said. The National Fire Agency said it had not detected “any serious damage” following the earthquake which injured 27 people, according to the Ministry of Health.
Due to the consequences of the earthquake, schools and offices remained closed today in Nanxi district and Dapu municipality, in the mountainous county of Chiayi, north of the epicenter.
