Suspicious death of a young student, violent protests in China

Shaanxi authorities accused of covering up investigations

Violent protests have erupted in China after the death of a teenage student sparked accusations of a cover-up by authorities, CNN reports, citing videos taken in the northwestern region of Shaanxi.

In the videos, dozens of protesters are seen facing a wall of police in riot gear outside the Pucheng Vocational Technical School, with some throwing batons and other objects at the officers. In response, police beat some protesters, throwing others to the ground. The young student, Dang, died on January 2nd. Local authorities in Pucheng say he fell from a window of his dormitory, but the organization Human Rights in China reported “suspicious circumstances”, including reports of “signs of struggle in Dang’s dormitory” and speculation that was “pushed from the roof”. And then there are the accusations from the student’s family that the photos on his cell phone were deleted.
