South Korea, former defense minister attempts suicide in prison

Kim Yong-hyun is the central figure in the martial law case

Former South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun attempted to take his own life in a prison in Seoul, where he is being held on insurrection charges linked to an investigation into President Yoon Suk-yeol’s martial law, declared on December 3 and withdrawn a few hours later due to the rejection of Parliament. This was reported by Yonhap, reporting what Shin Yong-hae, the head of the penitentiary centre, said during a parliamentary hearing. Kim, believed to be the central figure in the martial law case, is being held “in a protective cell and his health remains stable.”
