Pakistan, 5 men sentenced to death for 'online blasphemy'

So far a sentence has never been performed for this crime

Five men were sentenced to death for “online blasphemy” in Pakistan, where the processes for posts considered offensive towards Islam, a state religion, are increased. The condemned, four Pakistani and an Afghan, can appeal against the sentence, pronounced on Tuesday in Rawalpindi, a twin and popular city of Islamabad. Until now, Pakistan has never performed a death sentence for blasphemy, and the capital penalties imposed for this crime are generally commuted to life imprisonment. “The five defendants were sentenced to death for spreading blasphemous content against the prophet,” Rao Abdur Raheem, lawyer of the Pakistani legal commission for blasphemy (LCBP), told the AFP. This extremely zealous group boasts of having reported more than 300 cases to justice and obtained dozens of convictions. It was precisely the LCBP that filed the complaint against the five convicted. “The five men were also sentenced to life imprisonment for having desecked a copy of the Koran and 10 years of prison for offending the feeling of believers,” added the lawyer Abdur Raheem.
