At the Tottori market, in the north-western area of the country
A snow crab in Japan reached the maximum price of 1.5 million yen (around 9,200 euros) in the first seasonal auction held in the port of Tottori, the city of the prefecture of the same name located in the north of the country.
About 200 people, including officials from fishing cooperatives and administrative agencies, attended the ceremony, which took place after the opening of the fishing season – for what is considered a winter delicacy in the coastal region of Sanin.
The crabs present at the auction will be shipped mainly to the Kansai region, in the south-west of the archipelago, and to the Tottori prefecture itself, where a festival will be organized which will include a raffle to win crabs, at least 1,000 portions of crab soup, a singing show and more, reports the local press.
In 2019, in the same location, a snow crab was sold at auction for around 5 million yen, equal to 30,600 euros. Due to its delicate flesh and high nutritional value, the male crustacean is considered a first-choice food for high-end cuisine in Japan.
