The former Prime Minister, who died yesterday, started the country’s economic rebirth
An uninterrupted tribute from representatives of the entire Indian political spectrum and thousands of ordinary people, queuing in Delhi since the early hours of this morning, was paid to the former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who died yesterday at the age of 92.
In his years at the helm of the country, from 2004 to 2014, Singh, who had previously been finance minister, and had an established reputation in the global economy, with his policies gave the impetus to the start of the country’s economic revival.
Together with the entire leadership of the Congress party, of which Singh was a leading exponent, Sonia Gandhi paid tribute to the veteran politician flanked by her children Rahul and Priyanka and the president of the Congress party Mallikarjun Kharge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Interior Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda showed up at Singh’s residence.
“India will always remember Singh’s contribution to the growth of the nation,” Modi wrote on X, in a post in which he also published images of his visit.
The funeral rite for the politician, whose body lies in a flower-covered coffin, draped in the Indian tricolour, is scheduled for tomorrow, to allow one of Singh’s daughters to reach India from the United States.
