Hurricane Chido, 'hundreds of victims expected'

The prefect of Mayotte declared it

The death toll from Cyclone Chido, which destroyed Mayotte, will be “several hundreds” and “maybe a few thousand”, a local authority in the French Indian Ocean territory has said.

“I think it will certainly be several hundred, perhaps we will approach a thousand or even a few thousand,” prefect Francois-Xavier Bieuville told broadcaster Mayotte la Premiere, after the disaster largely destroyed the shantytowns where he lives around a third of the archipelago’s population, as well as having cut off electricity, water and communications links.
