More than 90,000 people evacuated in one week
The death toll has risen to at least 13 in Thailand and Malaysia caused by the floods that hit the southern and northern regions of the two countries respectively following torrential rains over the last week.
“Floods in eight provinces in southern Thailand have affected 553,921 families and caused nine deaths, prompting agencies to mobilize urgent assistance,” Thailand Civil Defense said in a statement. Additionally, more than 13,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, with temporary shelters set up in schools and temples, the statement added.
In neighboring northern Malaysia, meanwhile, rains have killed at least four people and forced the evacuation of at least 80,000 people to temporary shelters this week.
