Erutta Vulcano in Indonesia, column of ash of 10 kilometers

Laki-Laki Lewotobi is located on the tourist island of Flores

An Indonesian volcano erupted a 10 -kilometer -high ash column topped with lightning weeks after another huge eruption had caused dozens of flight cancellations in Bali last month.

The Laki-Laki Lewotobi, a 1,584 meters high volcano, is located on the tourist island of Flores, to the east of Jellyfish. “The height of the eruptive column was observed at about 10,000 meters above the top,” said the Indonesian volcanological agency. There have been no immediate reports of damage or victims.

The eruption has been triggered by an accumulation of gas in recent weeks, said the head of the geological agency Muhammad Wafid in a press release. The expert also felt the possibility of dangerous floods of Lahar – a type of mud flow or debris of volcanic materials – in case of strong rains, in particular for the communities close to rivers. Tourists and residents were told to avoid a ray of six kilometers around the crater. The images shared by the country’s geological agency showed volcanic lightnings near the top of the ash plume.

Last month, the volcano erupted a colossal 18 -kilometer high ash tower, erasing 24 flights from Bali International Airport. There have been no immediate reports of canceled flights after today’s eruption. Laki-Laki, which in Indonesian means “man”, is twinned with the most calm but higher volcano, Perempuan, 1,703 meters, which derives from the Indonesian word “woman”.
