China, 13.5 million students for the tough Gakao exam

Equivalent to maturity, decides access to the best universities

(ANSA -AFP) – Beijing, Jun 07 – Thirteen and a half million Chinese students are engaged by this morning in Gakao, the very hard final examination of secondary studies, the equivalent of our maturity. Considered as one of the most demanding exams in the world, Gookao evaluates the set of knowledge acquired by students in 12 years of school, through evidence of Chinese, mathematics and English. The result of the examination determines the possibility of access to the most prestigious universities.

The exam is the most popular topic on Chinese social networks this morning, starting with Weibo. Numerous videos provide advice on how to better face the test. “I can’t sleep before Gookao” was among the trend topic on the eve. For many students, the difficulty of testing and its importance for the continuation of the studies make it a real nightmare.

The risk of fraud to this exam is very high, and the authorities are on those who live. Chinese vice -premier Ding Xuexiang reiterated the importance of the fight against cheating. The offices where the exam is held are controlled by the police, the routes are closed to circulation. In many cities it is even forbidden to use the horn, so as not to disturb the students. In some schools, facial recognition is even used.

The admission rate to the University of Candidates in Gakao in recent years has risen from 80% to 90%. But many students choose to repeat the exam the following year, because the vote obtained is too low to access the desired university.
