‘National Mobilization’, deployed 6,700 firefighters in Sudest
South Korea said today that 18 people died in one of the worst forest fires of the Asian country, with numerous bonfires still in progress and thousands of firefighters who try to dominate them.
“Eighteen people died in fires,” said an official from the South Korean Ministry of Security by adding that “six people were seriously injured and 13 others suffered slight injuries”. The fires affect the Sudest of the Asian country, devastated thousands of hectares and reduced to ash an ancient Buddhist temple. The work of the firefighters is complicated by the dry climate and the strong winds that facilitate the propagation of the flames. South Korean interim president Han Duck-Soo said that the bonfires are “growing in a way that exceeds existing forecast models” and has announced a “full national mobilization” in response, raising the fire alert at the highest level. There are over 6,700 firefighters deployed to fight the various fires, specified the Ministry of the Interior and South Korean security: two fifths of the staff is located in the Uiseong area, in the eastern province of Gyeongsang.
