The US president speaks to the interim president of South Korea
The alliance between Seoul and Washington “will remain the pillar of peace and prosperity” in the Asia-Pacific region, US President Joe Biden told South Korean Prime Minister and interim President Han Duck-soo.
During this first exchange between Biden and Han since the latter took over the position of his predecessor Yoon Suk-yeol who was impeached by Parliament yesterday, the US president “expressed his appreciation for the resilience of democracy and the rule of law in Republic of Korea,” the White House said in a statement.
Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung said at a press conference today that his party will not consider impeachment against Han for now, following the dismissal of Yoon Suk-yeol. The local media reported it. The head of the Democratic Party of Korea told reporters that he had stressed to the prime minister and interim president the importance of managing state affairs in a neutral position, during a phone call with Han himself yesterday.
