And to the deliveries of armaments already ordered by Taipei. Based on the 1982 agreement
Chinese President Xi Jinping will ask Donald Trump to stop the sale of US arms to Taiwan during the summit scheduled for this week in Washington, recalling the 1982 Sino-US agreement. This was reported by the Reuters website, citing three sources informed of the preparatory talks between China and the US.
Beijing would also have asked the US to stop deliveries of armaments already ordered by Taipei. In exchange, according to sources cited by Reuters, China would offer greater collaboration in putting pressure on Iran in the Middle East conflict.
According to the sources, Beijing is expected to recall the third of three joint communiqués signed by the two countries in 1982, in which Washington declared its intention to gradually reduce arms sales to Taiwan and not to pursue long-term supplies. However, then US President Ronald Reagan specified that this commitment was subordinate to China’s desire to pursue a peaceful resolution of differences with Taiwan.
Trump has not yet approved a new arms package for Taiwan worth around 14 billion dollars, while in December Washington had authorized supplies of 11 billion.
