A landslide in Gyirong county in Tibet’s Shigatse city on the Nepalese side has caused “heavy losses” and left people missing. A death toll has not yet been released. Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered everything possible to be done to search for and rescue people missing after a landslide. This was reported by Xinhua and People’s Daily.
Xi called for doing everything possible to search for and rescue missing people, relocate and settle residents threatened by the event and speed up treatment of the injured, with the aim of minimizing casualties. He also ordered to strengthen monitoring and warnings, ensure that relief operations are conducted according to scientific criteria, and prevent the occurrence of secondary disasters.
Premier Li Qiang in turn asked to quickly verify the number of missing and affected people, organize all available forces for rescue operations, transfer people in danger in a timely and orderly manner and prevent further disasters. He also asked the Foreign Ministry to strengthen communication and coordination with affected countries and promptly communicate information to jointly manage relief operations.
At the disposal of Xi and Li, Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing went to the site with the heads of the departments concerned to lead the rescue and emergency management operations.
Tibetan authorities have mobilized forces for search and rescue activities at the disaster site.
