The budget, including ordinary and special, exceeds 3% of GDP for the first time
Taiwan will propose an overall defense budget of 1,122.5 billion Taiwan dollars (around 35.2 billion dollars) for 2027, exceeding the one trillion threshold for the first time and remaining above 3% of GDP. This was announced by President Lai Ching-te, as reported on the official website, after hearing the presentation of the central budget project for next year for the second time today.
“Next year’s overall defense budget, including the annual and special budgets, will exceed one trillion for the first time, reaching NT$1,122.5 billion,” Lai said, according to Taiwan’s Presidential Office.
Lai listed strengthening defense capabilities among the government’s top five priorities for 2027, stressing that investment in defense is to “invest in peace” and maintain stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region.
The 2027 budget will now have to be submitted to Parliament for consideration.
