At least 27 dead in a fire that devastated a pub in Bangkok

Flames tamed after half an hour. The causes are still under investigation

At least 27 people have died in a fire that devastated a pub in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. The Associated Press Online reports it. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the cause of the fire was still under investigation. Anutin said a musician performing at the pub told him he saw smoke coming from a switch near the stage before a blackout, then an explosion was heard and thick smoke quickly filled the venue. Many of the victims were found in the toilets at the back of the pub, Anutin added.

It took firefighters about half an hour to contain the fire.

Footage released online by rescuers shows a huge fire and columns of smoke coming out of the front door of the Na Ladprao pub, in the northern area of the Thai capital. People can be seen trying to escape while thick black smoke rises into the sky. Rescuers said the fire was reported around midnight local time.

Thailand has experienced similar tragedies in the past. In 2022, 14 people lost their lives in a fire at a music venue in the eastern part of the country.
