Xi Jinping spoke on the phone with Donald Trump

First conversation between the two since 2021, the Chinese vice president will be at the inauguration ceremony in Washington

Chinese President Xi Jinping “had a telephone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump”. This was reported by state agency Xinhua.

This is the first phone call between the two since 2021, when the tycoon left the White House, and a few days before the inauguration ceremony of the American president-elect on January 20 which will be attended by Chinese vice president Han Zheng, as the communist leader’s special envoy.

“We both attach great importance to mutual interactions and both hope that China-US relations will have a good start during the new term of the President of the United States”, Xi told Trump in the conversation, held today in the evening “at the request of this last,” Chinese state network CCTV reported.

“We are both willing to promote greater progress in China-US relations starting from a new starting point”, added the Chinese president, who “congratulated Trump on his re-election as president of the United States”, underlining that China and the USA, “two great countries” that are “pursuing their respective dreams and are committed to enabling their respective peoples to live a better life”.

Given the broad common interests and broad cooperation space, the two sides “can become partners and friends, contribute to each other’s success and promote shared prosperity for the good of the two countries and the whole world,” the Chinese leader said, according to the report released by Beijing’s diplomacy, underlining that it considers it “natural” that “two large countries with different national conditions have disagreements. The important thing is mutual respect for their fundamental interests, their main concerns” and the search “for a solution adequate”.

As for the thorny issue of Taiwan, “it concerns the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of China”, said Xi, hoping that “the American side must approach it with caution.”

Trump, according to Beijing’s report, thanked Xi for the congratulations and said he appreciated “his great relations” with the Chinese leader, expressing the hope that the parties could continue to talk to each other and have a face-to-face meeting soon. The two leaders also exchanged views “on the Ukrainian crisis, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and other important international and regional issues of mutual interest”, agreeing “to establish a strategic communication channel to keep in regular contact on key issues of interest common”.
