Vietnam, queues at jewelery shops for lucky gold despite record prices

The metal considered a good omen for the new year

Despite gold prices at record levels, consumers of all ages in Vietnam are flocking to jewelry stores to buy gold for good luck, considered a good omen for the new year.

February 26 is, in fact, the day of the God of Wealth, celebrated on the tenth day of the first lunar month, as we read on Vietnam News.

The phenomenon this year concerns in particular the so-called “mini gold”, products in 24 karat gold weighing less than half a gram, designed for those who do not want to face high costs but still want to participate in the tradition.

Major companies in the industry have launched hundreds of new product lines, with designs inspired by the year of the horse and symbols of prosperity such as carp, money bags and gold bars.

The market has limited supplies and many jewelry stores have imposed purchase limits per customer due to high demand. Although the price of gold has almost doubled compared to the same period last year, buyers justify the expense with tradition and the search for good fortune. Silver products are also gaining popularity as a more accessible alternative for those seeking symbols of luck and savings.
