The initiative organized by the Consulate General in Canton
The tenth edition of the Italian Design Day in the World – Italian design day – was celebrated in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, a hub of technological innovation and a UNESCO Creative City for Design.
The initiative, organized by the Consulate General of Italy in Canton in collaboration with the Istituto Marangoni of Shenzhen, a point of reference in the Greater Bay Area for training in fashion and design, proposed a reflection on the annual theme ‘Re-Design. Regenerate spaces, objects, ideas, relationships’, exploring the potential of design and architecture in improving the spaces of daily life and the well-being of communities.
The conference was opened by the Consul General of Italy in Canton, Valerio De Parolis. As Idd Shenzhen 2026 testimonial, architect Carlo Biasia, Special Project Architect of Interni Magazine, highlighted how the project must now deal with issues such as environmental sustainability, the responsible use of resources and the quality of public space, underlining the importance of an interdisciplinary approach capable of integrating architecture, technology and the social dimension. Biasia also recalled the value of Italian design as an expression of a design culture attentive to the relationship between aesthetics, function and innovation.
Followed by a round table moderated by Robin Fang, Director of the Istituto Marangoni in Shenzhen. Architect Carlo Biasia and other industry experts took part in the discussion, including Luo Ying (Full Professor at the Department of Fashion Design, Shenzhen University of Technology) and Emanuele Colombo (Didactic Director of the Istituto Marangoni in Shenzhen). The participants explored the topic in depth by reflecting on how design can respond to the challenges posed by rapid technological change and new consumption models.
